What is Climate?

Climate is the statistics of weather, usually over a 30-year interval. It is measured by assessing the patterns of variation in temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, precipitation, atmospheric particle count and other meteorological variables in a given region over long periods of time. Climate differs from weather, in that weather only describes the short-term conditions of these variables in a given region.

Alberta City, Canada

I ask my cousin who live in Canada about the climate they currently experiencing. Her name is Beatrice Salaveria Kaguyutan, 19 years old. Lives in Red Deer, Alberta City, Canada. She is a Filipino who migrated 10 years ago with her family. The current weather there is winter that makes the temperature so cold that it can reach negative Celsius. She said that during winter water cannot flow through the drainage system and rivers because it is frozen.  Unlike here in the Philippines we do not experience this cold weather but we experienced clogged drainage system but on different reason, which is the garbage not properly disposed. In Canada there are four seasons which is spring, summer, fall and winter, that’s why my cousins said that they have different clothing (for cold weather, and for hot) depends on the season. She also said that in Canada they give importance to their environment like having proper disposal of waste. They focus on the materials that can be recycled like boxes, bottle drinks, & cans. The government pays 10 cents whenever you properly throw this kinds of materials. My cousin’s favorite season is winter, she said that she likes cold weather and she love snow even as she was a child but she also miss the climate here in the Philippines. Winter in Canada starts on December to March, at daytime temperature reaches below 0 degrees Celsius and even colder at night time that’s why you should were warm clothing and hats that covers the ears. Some sports can be enjoyed during this season like skating, skiing or building snowmen. It is a must that all of your skin is covered whenever you are in outdoor area, leaving the skin uncovered can cause frostbite. The advantage of having a different season is that you can enjoy different temperatures, unlike here in the Philippines we only experience rainy and hot season. The disadvantage is that changing season which affect the temperature drop or rise gradually can harm us humans. Most of the drop or rise of the temperature humans cannot handle because of our limitation that’s why when on areas like Canada we should be alert or updated on the climate so that we can be prepared or ready on different temperatures.

Story Of Stuff Video Review (Materials Economy)

Human inventions surrounds us in this generation. Some are useful but more of it is not. In this topic
I will discuss what I learned about materials economy. The ones who are powerful divide its system into 5 steps. Annie Leonard, a critic of excessive consumerism proves and demonstrate through the video 3 more parts which is the factory workers, the government & the corporation.

5 Parts Of Materials Economy

Extraction

All of the things invented and fabricated came from our natural resources and mixed with chemicals. Cutting trees, mining, & killing animals are usually the type of extraction (which is non-renewable) a production will go through just to produce a product. Because of that we are running out of resources, in the video it states that in the past 3 decades 1/3 of the earth's basis are gone. It will cause global warming and cause the earth to loss its equilibrium which is dangerous for us. The problem on the customary extraction is that they are using a lot of natural resources which is very much inordinate. Derived from a study conducted by environmental group in Aurora Forester states that only 20% of the Philippines original forest remains and 4,200 people die each year due to contaminated drinking water. It is very alarming because there will come a day that humans will struggle.

Production

The extracted material will be move to production where the natural resources will be mix to chemicals to create a desired product. Majority of the products are toxic for us humans. The most affected people are those who work inside the factory & the pregnant women that breathes the polluted air due to the toxic coming out of the factory. Instead of helping the neighbors and giving what consumers need they are giving us sickness, useless & harmful things.

Distribution

It passes the goods/products until it reaches the end of consumer. Its goal is to sell all the products quickly, keep the people from buying & keeping the inventory moving. The secret to sell all the products quickly is to lower the price of each. But to be able to do this the owner should lower the salary of each store workers & to skip them to be a regular employee to avoid government benefits. Which is bad, greedy & inhuman!

Consumption

It is the heart, the priority of the system, because of this all the businessmen are working their-self off even though they would become inhuman. The people in this generation are a nation of consumers even I will admit. I cannot blame myself because it is common and we are used to it. Majority of the new invention today will be replace of something new which has the same benefits or function but different look and much more expensive! Because of that we consumer will be convinced that we need to have an updated product even though or without knowing that our existing product is still working well. Because of that commercial is that best example of how the corporations easily brainwashed our minds. Some people depends their happiness through things which is not good because that is not the true happiness, more things can make us busy (because of working hard just to buy updated/useless stuff) and having us less time for our family, friends and other productive doings

Disposal

Not all that we consume will last forever most of it is not sturdy so that we will buy again their stuffs. Most of it will be trash! In a study a single resident here in the Philippines produces an average of 0.7 kg of waste per day or 8,400 to 8,600 tons of trash per day. All of this garbage will either be left at the ground, at the air and even on water that makes the planet polluted. Solution for this is to recycle those trash but the problem is many of these product is the recyclable and that is not the root cause of the problem. So the best solution is to change the culture of what the generation today are used to.

People, Government, Corporations, Society, Culture, Economy & Environment.

The video shows us that the 5 steps of material economy are incomplete, the government sugar coated the diagram so that it can look simple as if theres no danger to the surroundings. Diagram don't include the people living on the province who are affected of the extractions of natural resources like cutting trees, killing the animals which is the source of their food, contaminating their water which result of undrinkable water & harassing their shelter just because they do not have the papers to prove that they own the land even though they live there before since the early time. The weather at their place will be affected because of illegal logging and like I said the corporations harassing them which lead them no choice but to transfer on urban places just to find a source of living. Majority of the factory workers came to those provinces affected by the extraction. Governments are more concerned about the economy thats why the corporations are their priority, even though the people, their culture and the environment will be affected. This linear practice should be replace because our planet has its limits thats why we should think of something new that can help our society to be organized and to avoid harming the environment. As a student of Mechanical Engineering I should think of a solution that can solve this problem in the long run, I thought of some but the profit I will get is low. That's a problem here in our present generation. For now as a consumer we should avoid buying things that is worthless to avoid toxic and trash, and so that the leaders will think of something new to boost the economy rather than harming the nature. Because if the stuff they produce will not be consumed, they will stop its inhuman activity. This solution cannot be done by one person only, people should help each other, understand each other so that we can be united.

Environmental Engineering

Introduction about myself

Hi I am Nelson John M. Alcantara, I am a student of Don Bosco Technical College here in Mandaluyong taking up Mechanical Engineering. I chose this course because I love math and I am fond with cars. Here in my blog I will discuss about the different environmental problems especially here in the Philippines. Problems that affects our lives that can cause us stress & inconvenience. Our group will choose one problem that we can overcome and discuss its root cause.

Environment problems

Here in the Philippines we have a very beautiful places & wonderful nature view, the tropical weather that is very suitable for beaches & weather that helps the farmers grow their plants in good condition. But today environment in the Philippines is getting worse due to climate change, pollution, & hardheadedness of the people living here. On our first meeting in Environmental Engineering, our professor Ma’am Llorente, introduced & discussed us about the course/subject. I was reminded about the problems on our environment that badly needs solution in order for us to live an organized, clean, safe, at peace, & better everyday lives. Solution to this problems is also a must so that our planet to last longer.

Brainstorming

Our group chose top five (5) environmental issues that we can handle & study to find a better solution for the progress of our country & countrymen. The five (5) issues are; Flood At May Silo Circle Mandaluyong City, Traffic at the Intersection of Gabby’s, Burning of Garbage, Garbage in front of BPI at Kalentong Street, Mandaluyong City & Old Vehicles. Our group is willing to study all five (5) problems but only one is needed, so we chose Flood at May Silo Circle Mandaluyong City. We chose this topics because most of us are affected on this inconvenience that took us an hour just to go to places that usually cause only a few minutes.

Flood at May Silo Circle Mandaluyong City

The construction of drainage system at May Silo Circle Mandaluyong started in March 2014, until now it is still under construction that cause the area to smell bad because of clogged water, causes heavy traffic, inconvenience to pedestrians & slows down business around the area . The diagram below shows the root cause of the problem. May Silo Circle always has flood because of clogged canals that even a small amount of rain can cause inconvenience. Clogged canal can occur because of the garbage improperly thrown by the people, it might because of the lack of garbage can or lack of self-discipline of the people. Large amount of garbage can be also caused by the overpopulation here in Metro Manila, that every person access that road may leave a certain garbage due to again lack of garbage can.

Piping system is being rehabilitated because the present piping system can no longer hold large amount of water which slower the current of water hence flood will occur. As seen on the diagram the root cause of all problem will fall into our government. Garbage cans are few maybe because the government do not regulate proper waste management, the improvement of drainage system is delayed until now maybe the government do not have full control on companies or its contractor or maybe the project implementation practices corruption. That's why in order to solve the problem on the flood near Mandaluyong City Hall, the government should not be corrupt and should spent well the budget correctly. Our propose problem can be studied much more and our group will assure that we can solve or find a more solution to this problem.
